Young Navajo Singer Gains Recognition for Debut Song in Native Language

Tsaile, Ariz. Nala Rain Nelson, a promising young Navajo singer, is making waves by recording her first song in the Navajo language, sharing her unique voice and cultural heritage with listeners Diné College Warrior Radio. Her debut single celebrates familial blessings.

A lifelong lover of music, Nala’s singing roots began in childhood, performing during pageants and cultural events. Now, at just twelve years old, she is gaining recognition for her dedication to preserving and promoting the Navajo language through her music.

“I love singing because it’s fun and makes me feel free,” Nala shared. “Recording this song wasn’t just about performing; it’s about sharing our culture and its beauty with the world.”

Nala’s talents caught the attention of Razor Salt Boy, a respected Navajo singer-songwriter and producer, who collaborated with her on the song. “I knew Nala was the perfect voice for this song,” Razor said. “Her natural talent and passionate connection to her Navajo heritage brought the lyrics to life. This marks Nala’s first time in a recording studio, an experience that helped her refine her craft. She is already planning new projects while balancing her academic ambitions. A cross-country runner and active participant in student activities at Baker Middle School in Kayenta, Arizona, Nala aims high—not only in music but also in her dream of becoming a pediatrician.

Support for her music has steadily grown, with her single now featured on popular streaming platforms and garnering attention on social media. “It’s amazing to hear from friends that my song is trending on social media sites. I’m so happy people are connecting with it,” Nala said.

Her accomplishments are the culmination of years of preparation and encouragement from family, including her mother, grandmother, and siblings, who have been key influences in her musical upbringing.

Describing her inspiration, Nala emphasized, “My family played a big role in teaching me our songs and helping me love singing in Navajo.”
